Farhan Akhtar is on cloud nine, well for what he has achieved but for what his father Javed Akhtar as achieved. Javed Akhtar, the veteran writer, lyricist and poet have been conferred with the coveted Sahitya Akademi Award for his Urdu poetry. Javed Akhtar has been been chosen for his book “Lava”, a compilation of fifty five Urdu Poems.
“It’s a proud moment for not only me but the entire family. We are really happy for him. This Sahitya Akademi award that he has got is very well deserved and I would like to congratulate all the recipients of the awards in various fields,” said an elated Farhan.
Javed Akhtar has been awarded this prestigious award for the poetry in Urdu language. Along with Javed Akhtar, several other poets and writers are being awarded for their literary works in different languages. This literary honor is conferred upon writers for their outstanding work in the field of literature.
Writer Temsula Ao, from Nagaland has won the award for her English short story Laburnum For My Head; Bengali poet Subodh Sarkar’s Dwaipayan Hrader Dhare also won the prestigious award in Bengali. Other winners for poetry are Namdev Tarachandani, Arjun Charan Hembram, Radhakant Thakur, Ambika Dutt, Sitaram Sapolia and Anil Boro.
The jury members who are responsible for selecting the winners represent twenty two Indian languages. They recommend the winner and then the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi further approves the list. The Sahitya Akademi works to propagate Indian writers, playwrights and poets in English and other Indian languages.
Javed Akhtar, aged sixty eight started his Bollywood career in the year 1971 as a dialogue writer for the film Andaz. Post this he has written successful films like Zanjeer, Sholay and Deewar, among others. Javed Akhtar started writing lyrics for films beginning with Silsila in 1981 and since 1982 have written lyrics for around eighty films.
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place March 11, 2014 during the annual Akademi’s Festival Of Letters organized by the Sahitya Akademi in New Delhi. The winners will be awarded a sum of Rs One lac, and a copper plaque containing a shawl.
