The dusky, seductive, sexy Indian model-turned-actress Chitrangada Singh is unconventional in many, many ways. Right from her ethereal looks to her choice of films, she is one beautiful lady who has chosen to walk the line.
Born on 28 March, 1976, this stunning looker has tread off the beaten path since the very beginning. Hailing from Meerut, in Western U.P, Chitrangada Singh charted an unconventional course for herself. She began her career as a model in Delhi, before transitioning to the silver screen.
Her modelling assignments included big names like ICICI Bank and others. She then switched gears and tried her hand at music videos, most famously appearing in the video for Gulzar’s Sunset Point, which was a big hit at the time.
Chitrangada Singh’s appearance in the video got her noticed, and she was spotted by Sudhir Mishra’s production manager. And the rest, as they say, is history!
Interestingly, Sudhir Mishra has mentored the dusky beauty since the inception, and even gave her her first filmy break. She was seen in Mishra’s critically acclaimed Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, where she essayed the role of a strong female character.
That was in 2003. The role garnered her much critical acclaim, with many comparing her looks and acting talent to the simmering intensity of the late Smita Patil. In fact, the Washington Review even heaped praise on her, saying that she gave her character a deep sense of dignity and decency.
Then in 2005, she appeared in a film called Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow, but that film sank at the Box Office. Post that she went on a hiatus of sorts, opting to focus on her marriage to pro golfer Jyoti Randhawa. She returned to celluloid in 2008, giving a super hit performance in Onir’s romantic comedy Sorry Bhai.
Once again in 2011, Chitrangada Singh starred in a Sudhir Mishra film, to much critical acclaim. Yeh Saali Zindagi was a critical success, and brought her to the attention of mainstream directors.
That very year, she starred alongside Akshay Kumar, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone in Rohit Dhawan’s Desi Boyz. She was appreciated for her portrayal of a sexy college professor, and her comic timing too was lauded.
The actress has faced many hurdles in her private life though, since then. In 2013, she separated from her husband Jyoti. She shuttles between Mumbai and Delhi, to take care of her work and family commitments to her son Zorawar Randhawa.
The feisty actress was last seen in the 2013 comic caper I, Me Aur Main and is currently filming a Tamil film, in which she has a special appearance. Let’s hope the dusky brunette returns to films soon.
Here’s wishing Chitrangada Singh a very Happy Birthday!
