Yash Raj launches Kabul Express music

MUMBAI: The music of Yash Raj Films’ latest production Kabul Express was released last week. The film is directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Aditya Chopra.

The film’s music offers the listener some of the most melodious tunes in recent times, composed by debutant music director, the multi-instrumentalist and singer Raghav Sachar. The lyrics are also by a debutant, Aditya Dhar, with lyrics for the track Banjar featuring additional contributions from Swaratmika Mishra and Vijay Kumar.

The album opens with the title track, called Kabul Fiza, a youthful, contemporary tune that conveys the international feel of the movie, and slips effortlessly between western and Indian instruments. It is sung by the composer himself.

Banjar features the voice of Shubha Mudgal in a song that captures the flavour of Afghanistan where the movie is based and where it has been shot extensively on location. Add the tremendous percussion work on the song by the talented Sivamani and you have a track that is certain to rule the airwaves for some time to come.

The tempo slows down a bit with the next track, Keh Raha Mera Dil, sung again by Sachar. A mellower sounding number, the song takes listeners on a nostalgic trip into the most memorable moments of their lives.

The album also features a couple of interesting instrumental numbers. The Kabul Express theme composed by Julius Packiam makes heavy use of the flute and Arabic beats and changes the mood completely. An ethereal Arabic female voice in the background just adds to the music. The instrumental version of the Kabul Fiza Theme features the multiple talents of composer Raghav Sachar, who plays the saxophone, saxonet, flute, piccolo, aulos, guitar and various percussion instruments on this album. And to prove that he is as effective in the recording studio as he is in the playing of his instruments, Sachar comes up with the faster remix version of Kabul Fiza.

The lounge mix of Banjar features the voice of Sunidhi Chauhan and is different enough from the original to sound like a completely new work in the album. And completing the suite of Banjar songs is Indipop favourite KK who brings a fresh touch to Banjar (Revisited). Sachar himself sings another solo number Yeh Main Aaya Kahaan Hoon where he makes superb use of harmonies to capture the wistful yearning in the song.
