India’s contribution to Academy Awards has been plenty but the only one that stands out is Slumdog Millionaire which was as much Indian as it was western. Many don’t even consider it as an Indian film.
What people belive in is the entry our films make in the Foreign film category as the legitimate one. Anyway, time and again, we have sent many films which always fail to clinch the ultimate prize. Last year it created a feud of sorts in the fraternity when The Good Road got the go ahead rather than the celebrity backed simplistic film The Lunchbox. This time FFI won’t earn any brickbats because this year’s choice in Geetu Mohandas’ The Liar’s Dice which seems to have received good patronage.
But the majority of India is unaware of this selection. They don’t know what Liar’s Dice is and we would like to make them aware of it. So first of all, talking about the story, Liar’s Dice is a woman’s journey to find her lost husband. Enroute to that she meets a drifter Nawazuddin Siddiqui who decides to help her in her quest in return for a bangle. How the journey enfolds forms the crux of the story.
Liar’s Dice won two National Awards, one for Geetanjali Thapa and won for cinematographer Rajeev Rai. It made it to many film festivals and was applauded everywhere. The open-ended conclusion seem to have found takers everywhere. The irony is even after being so acclaimed, the film is struggling to get a release in India. May be this laurel will help it get a few theatres. Also, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui finding a new fan base after Kick, can work in its favour too. Nawaz plays the drifter in the film while Thapa played the protagonist.
