Controversies Helping Aamir Khan's PK?

Aamir Khan’s “PK” is creating more controversies each passing day. After all, the director, Rajkumar Hirani should have known better. Touching the topic of religion in this country is a big NO-NO! But he did anyway and there, the most anticipated movie of the year, “PK”, gave birth to a lot of controversies. The most recent one is Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev’s call for social boycott of film “PK” and those involved in the making of the movie, on December 28, as it has criticized Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Aamir Khan is one of the exceptional Bollywood actors to maintain a proper distance from controversies. But, because of his preferences in going for extremely experimental movies and being the Mr. Perfectionist with his projects, Aamir always ends up doing things differently, and never forgets to leave a mark on the audience.

“PK” was one of such movies and as it left a mark on the audience, it also gave fire to a lot of controversies. Well, this is not the first time that the actor’s experiment of doing something new, gave way to controversies. His films “Mangal Pandey”, “Taare Zameen Par”, and “Fanaa” have attracted some bad press as well. But the main question is, are these controversies playing well for “PK”?

The day “PK” was released; the film received a lot of negative reviews, comments and even received threats from several religious groups. But it didn’t stop “PK” from progressing and becoming a blockbuster hit of the year.

As soon as the news of some serious actions that took place against Aamir’s “PK” came out, the supporters came forward to take a stand. Let’s take a look at howit all began. First, An FIR was lodged against Aamir Khan, director Raju Hirani and the producers of the film by Prashant Patel, Secretary of Hindi Legal Cell for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the Hindus. Initially, the locals by hurt by a scene where a man dressed as Shiva, pulls a rickshaw in which two burqa-clad women were sitting.

“We lodged an FIR under section 295 A (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religious of any class) and 153 A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) against the actors,” said a police official.

Not only that, right-wing groups started their protest against Aamir’s “PK” on Monday in Ahmedabad and Bhopal, and want to put a ban on the film. Even an online campaign against the film was started by The Hindu Jagram Shamithi, and within few hours, #WeSupportPK and #WeBoycottPK were trending on Twitter. As the war on micro-blogging site began, reaction that caught everyone’s main attention was when former Cabinet Minister of India, Subramanian Swamy said that, “A complaint will go soon to initiate action under PMLA on Aamir Khan & co for laundering terrorist finance.” Swamy had also tweeted on Monday (December 29, 2014), “Who financed the ‘PK’ film? According to my sources it is traceable to Dubai and ISI. DRI must investigate.”

And then the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) wrote to the information and broadcasting ministry demanding a stop on such movies and ‘changing the character of the censor board’. “It is requested that such films are stopped and character of institutions like censor board, which approve such movies, is corrected,”

However, senior BJP leader LK Advani has hailed the movie as a “wonderful and courageous film”. He is not the only one who is in support of the movie. Bollywood came forward and showed their support for Rajkumar Hirani’s “PK”. Tweets from Pooja Bedi, Uday Chopra, Raniv Shorey, Shekar Kapur, Ritesh Sidhwani, Karan Johar and many more show their massive support for “PK”.

The recent support for Aamir Khan’s film came from his very good friend, Salman Khan. Apparently, Salman Khan took to his Twitter account to expression his reaction towards “PK” and tweeted, “Is PK not an amazzziiiiing film?”

All these controversies, protests seem to be working well for the movie nonetheless. “PK” is doing fabulous in Box Office, and has become this year’s most earned film. The film’s overall total earning is Rs. 234 Crore (2.34 Billion) nett approx as for now. Good press or bad press, as long as there is fire, the smoke will surely reach the sky.
