MUMBAI: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End became the third biggest Hollywood film to open at the Indian box-office.
The Johnny Depp starrer released in India on 1 June and during the 1 – 3 June weekend plundered Rs 83 million (Rs 8.3 crores) with 318 prints across 341 screens. The film was released in India on 1 June by Buena Vista International through SPE Films India.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End sailed to the third highest reception ever accorded to a foreign film in India, behind the friendly neighbourhood superhero Spider-Man 3 (Rs 192 million) and James Bond’s Casino Royale (Rs 149 million) and ahead of Spider-Man 2 (Rs 78 million).
SPE Films India CEO Uday Singh said, "Jack Sparrow and the Pirates have landed to a tumultuous reception at the box-office captivating and enthralling Indian audiences. The word-of-mouth is very positive across all language versions and hence we are confident of the films continued success at the box office."
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, continued to rule the high seas at the box office in its second weekend of release in the international markets, boosting its worldwide gross-to-date to $625.3 million. Internationally (non US and Canada), the film grossed $408.8 million, reaching the $400 million plateau faster than any other film ever released at the international marketplace.
The film added $148.6 million in its second smash weekend of release. The film already ranks as the 31st highest grossing film in industry history and the eighth film in Disney history to reach this box office level.
Apart from Depp, the film also stars Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush and Chow Yun-Fat.
