Shemaroo releases Munshi Premchand’s short stories on home video

MUMBAI: Shemaroo Entertainment has released Munshi Premchand’s collection of short stories filmed on his work and observations on social ills and other issues on home video.

After being telecasted on Doordarshan in 1996, these stories are released on DVD and VCD for the first time by Shemaroo on the eve of Premchand’s 129 birth anniversary.

Prem Utsav 2009 is a theatre festival organized by Ideal Drama and Entertainment Academy (IDEA) for celebrating Premchand’s 129th birthday, which falls on 31 July.

The home video was unveiled by Anurag Kashyap along with two drama books based on stories of Premchand – Maa in Urdu and Aadab Main Premchand Hoon-II in Hindi.

Kashyap said, "Premchand’s Mansarovar was my introduction to the world of literature and short stories. Releasing Premchand’s filmed TV episodes on DVDs and VCDs is a great medium to reach out to today’s youth, to get them connected to our literature in an entertaining manner. Such DVDs would serve as great resource material for schools, colleges, students, writers who teach and study Hindi literature."

Shemaroo Entertainment director Hiren Gada added, "Premchand stories continue to be part of every Indians academic curriculum. Premchand wrote on the realistic issues of society, which are relevant even today. His stories represented the ordinary Indian people as they were. By releasing Premchand’s stories on home video we will not only be reaching out to a lot more audiences, but will also be providing them with quality and enlightened content."

The DVD pack and VCDs are a collection of episodic stories filmed on Munshi Premchand’s work that revolve around moral values, society and the youth.

Shemaroo also plans to bring these episodes back on television by tying up with broadcasters for the same. Apart from this, Shemaroo intends to promote and make these episodes available on many other platforms such as – the internet, broadband, IPTV, VOD, mobile and the overseas market as well.

Munshi Premchand’s Guldasta 3 DVD Pack is priced at Rs 499 whereas the VCDs ‘ four volumes are priced at Rs 99.
