Percept Picture Co. to produce movie on piracy menace

MUMBAI: Close on the heels of the piracy racket going bust in the Indian film industry, Percept Picture Company (PPC) has announced a movie which will dwell on the piracy menace. The film called Pirates will be directed by Ashu Trikha (Baabarr).

Increasing piracy of films, television, music and video games content has led to the loss of Rs 16,000 crore each year and 820,000 jobs afflicting India’s entertainment industry. The film is an attempt to create awareness amongst common people who with little knowledge of the impact support this dreadful industry. Pirates will be the first ever film made on this subject and Percept will attempt to unite the entire industry to support this cause cinema making it an industry initiative.

Pirates is an entertaining racy crime thriller, which goes behind the scenes on the murky world of piracy exposing the nexus of the trade. The film would also highlight the trials and tribulations of a film maker and his personal attempt to stop piracy. The visual treatment of the film would be realistic and investigative in nature and will be mostly shot at real locations.

Percept Ltd joint managing director Shailendra Singh said, "Percept has always recognized the power that cinema has, in making a social difference. We were pioneers in Cause Cinema, through our film Phir Milenge addressing AIDS. We have also in the past addressed piracy through ad films and music concerts. I strongly believe that Pirates would provide an ideal vehicle to create consumer awareness through the medium of entertainment."

Percept is garnering support from the film industry including corporates, individuals, actors and musicians for making this project a true industry initiative. Percept will also be seeking support from the government, crime enforcement agencies, industry associations, anti piracy organizations, and global institutions.

Singh added, "Pirates is a platform for the industry to unite for this cause and I am extremely glad to receive an enthusiastic response from likeminded companies and individuals such as Pritish Nandy Communications, T-Series, Sanjay Ghodawat Group, Maxwell Entertainment, Prasad Labs, David Dhawan, Sanjay Gupta to name a few. We are approaching many more partners and talent to truly make this a film by the industry for the industry."
