MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures ‘Barfi!, called by some as Anurag Basu’s “masterpiece”, has made the 100 crore mark at the Indian Box Office.
The Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’cruz starrer flew past this line in its second week itself if the overseas collections are included.
At the domestic box office, the rise has been slow, but most definitely steady.
Tracing the numbers: On its nationwide date of release Barfi! collected a good Rs 98 million (Rs 9.8 crore) net.
After receiving a solid 4 star and upward from every critic, the first weekend wrapped up at Rs 348 million (Rs 34.8 crore) net.
New releases like Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Heroine’, did not slow ‘Barfi!’ down at all. In fact after the announcement that this bitter-sweet love story of a deaf and mute boy and an autistic girl has been chosen by the Film Federation of India to represent the country in the foreign films segment at the 85th Oscar Academy Awards, ‘Barfi!’ took a major boost.
By 13 days the film stood at Rs 846.5 million (Rs 84.65 crore) net.
Now in its third week, the cine-goers are still flocking to the cinema halls to catch the ‘academy award entrant’. By Monday the film had touched Rs 988 million (Rs 98.8 crore) net.
Yesterday, Tuesday – a national holiday on account of Gandhi Jayanti proved to be quite useful for the film in getting the figures to surpass the Rs 100 crore line.
