MUMBAI: Priyanka Chopra, not one to take criticism lying down, has lashed out at her harshest critics, albeit in trademark PC style!
Priyanka has been under fire for her latest International music video, ‘Exotic’ featuring rap artist Pitbull, in which she has been deemed to be aping the style statements of pop icons like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears.
Priyanka, however, candidly laughed off the entire buzz around her alleged imitation outfits.
“I believe there is no need to be judgemental. Women have been wearing net dresses for ages now. I have worn it myself so many times, recent instance being at TOIFA. It is one of the most common combinations for a sexy outfit,” she said.
Priyanka was also surprised to note how the focus seemed to be on the one nude coloured, crystal embellished outfit, when she was also seen in other edgy ensembles in the video. “I am also wearing this silver top and shorts with chains. Then there is this whole ’80s style neon swimsuit with comic book shoes. All these things are not being talked about and instead, we are stuck debating this outfit which comes for barely 10 seconds,” she laughed.
She did seem a bit put off that instead of lauding her for trying something different, critics were trying to write her off.
“When somebody wants to pull you down and talk negative, then they will do so anyways. For me, it is a new thing to sing and perform in an international music video and I did it,” she reasoned.
Priyanka added, admitting that she was trying to mix things up, and change the way Bollywood music is perceived in the west: “I may not be the most path breaking artiste in the world but then, I have tried to do something different. I am trying to expose the world to Bollywood music without it being stereotypical. They say that an India song is bound to have 100 dancers in the background. We have done it differently here. I wanted India and I to go mainstream. If that is an effort which cannot be supported, then it’s fine.”
