KOLKATA: After playing an innocent simpleton in the upcoming ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, Sushant Singh Rajput is set to don a detective’s hat in his next.
Yash Raj Films and Dibakar Banerjee’s ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ will see the actor play a Bengali detective. Byomkesh Bakshi remains a favourite amongst television audiences till date and Rajit Kapoor’s act as the simple, smart detective still rules the roost.
Sushant Singh Rajput is set to reprise the same character which made a hallmark in television in the early 80’s and 90’s. As a part of the film’s promotion, director Dibakar Banerjee and Sushant Singh were spotted boarding a Kolkata bound train.
Dibakar Banerjee had earlier stated that ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ will trace the journey of a young Byomkesh Bakshi, who had high aspirations and passion for becoming a detective. Set in 1942 Calcutta (now Kolkata), the story will revolve around Byomkesh Bakshi’s initial cases.
“The film (‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’) will be the toughest film I will make. There is a plethora of challenges…It will be tremendously challenging to recreate the Calcutta of 1942 and I know it will be the toughest film of my life,” said Dibakar Banerjee speaking to a tabloid.
Going by the characterisation of Byomkesh Bakshi (as played by Rajit Kapoor), Sushant Singh has certain resemblances. Clad in a simple mustard striped kurta and white pyjamas, Sushant and Dibakar seemed to enjoy their train ride.
Maybe Dibakar was just sharing his experience of the city. He might be a Delhiite, but his love for the city is surely immortal.
‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ will be the first film for Dibakar Banerjee with Yash Raj Films. Considering the huge popularity of the detective series, it will be interesting to see if the association continues. More importantly, it needs to be seen whether it still be the current sensation, Sushant Singh Rajput, who stays loyal to ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’!
