MUMBAI: UTV’s Rang De Basanti, which has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars this year, has not only been a money spinner at the box office but has also recorded the highest number of VCDs and DVDs sale.
The film has until now grossed Rs 1.25 billion (Rs 125 crores). Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, UTV senior vice president marketing and communications Siddharth Roy Kapur says, “Rang De Basanti has recorded Rs 750 million (Rs 75 crore) in domestic box-office and Rs 350 million (Rs 35 crore) in the overseas market. The rest Rs 150 million (Rs 15 crore) was in the form of ancillary rights’ sale.”
Likewise, even the VCDs and DVDs sale has crossed the 300,000 units’ mark, which is a record in itself. Close to 72,000 DVDs of the film have been sold (and still counting), which is the highest ever in India.
