Onir to adapt Shakespeare’s Hamlet too!

Mumbai: Bollywood seems to have rediscovered Shakespeare with a vengeance. While innumerable films have been inspired by Romeo and Juliet (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak being one of the most popular), Angoor was an adaptation of A Comedy of Errors. But until now, nobody actually gave the Bard any credit

Vishal Bharadwaj interpreted Macbeth in Maqbool and Othello in Omkara, both to much critical success. Now he’s working on Hamlet as well as A Mid-summer Night’s Dream

Following him is director Onir of My Brother Nikhil fame. Equally enamoured by Hamlet, he is working on an adaptation set in modern India’s urban and cool culture with an eyes on Hrithik Roshan to play the tragic.

“I want my Hamlet in a modern family, capturing the essence of the drama. I want to fuse magic realism with Shakespeare’s idiom”, the director says.

Vishal Bhardwaj is reportedly unperturbed.
