Shyamalan’s The Happening grosses $63.6 mn worldwide

MUMBAI: M Night Shyamalan directed The Happening, which is co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and 20th Century Fox, has collected $63.6 million (Rs 2.63 billion) at the box office in its opening weekend.

The movie was released on Friday, 13 June, 2008. The Happening collected $31.5 million at the US box office and approximately $32.1 million from 5,714 screens in 88 other markets including India.

In India, The Happening was released with 55 prints and has collected approximately Rs 20 million in its opening weekend.

In key European countries, the movie approximately $ 10.3 million with France contributing $4.6 million from 550 screens, Spain collecting $3.8 million from 389 screens and Italy collecting $1.9 million from 371 screens.

Other notable territories include the UK on $3.4 million from 389 screens, Mexico on $2.6 million from 557 screens, Russia on $2.1 million from 482 screens, Germany on $1.8 million from 550 screens and South Korea on $1.6 million from 240 screens.

In Brazil, the movie collected $1.3 million from 181 screens, Australia – $1.5 million from 240 screens, Belgium – $467,184 from 60 screens and Holland on $357,475 from 78 screens.

The Happening was released with 10,100 prints worldwide with 4500 prints in over 2986 theatres across North America.

The movie, which has been made on a budget of $57 million, stars Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo and Spencer Breslin.

The Happening is scheduled to release in Japan on 26 July.
