MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures’ co-production with Twentieth Century Fox The Happening, which is directed by M Night Shyamalan, will be released in India with approximately 100 – 125 prints.
The movie, which is a supernatural thriller, will be distributed by UTV in India. The film has been made on a budget of $ 57 million, wherein UTV and Fox have equally invested $28.5 million.
UTV CEO Ronnie Screwvala said, "This Night Shyamalan film is the biggest co-production as yet from an Asian production house. We are excited to work with one of the best directors in the world. Personally, I have admired and followed his work since Sixth Sense. Night is an extremely talented writer-director and this sci-fi is going to get the best worldwide release."
The Happening focuses on man’s presence on Earth and explores the environment as the victim of his villainy. It has been shot extensively in the East Coast of America and Philadelphia.
The film stars Academy award nominated actor Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, Invincible) as Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher thrust into the middle of this nightmare. It also stars Zooey Deschanel, Spencer Breslin and John Leguizamo.
The movie will be released on Friday, 13 June and has the tagline – "We’ve Sensed It. We’ve Seen The Signs. Now… It’s Happening."
M Night Shyamalan said, "My partnership with UTV in the making of The Happening has given me, for the first time, a real opportunity to foster my relationship with Indian audiences."
Shyamalan, who has to his credit films like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village, is in India to receive the Padmashree Award from the President of India.
