#20YearOfDDLJ: Shah Rukh Khan Reveals He Had Rejected DDLJ

[tps_footer]Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ) is the longest running movie in the history of Indian Cinema. This movie tugged at the heartstrings of one and all when it released way back on October 20 in 1995. It’s been 20 years since the movie released. Recently, the movie celebrated its 1000^th week in Maratha Mandir.

But, did you know the movie that made Shah Rukh Khan, the King of Romance, had refused to do the movie?

Yash Raj Films released the making of this evergreen movie today. In the making, romance king of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, revealed that he had refused to this movie. He never wanted to do romantic film. He was more inclined towards action and other genre movies. Shah Rukh, who was mostly seen in dark-action-thrillers like “Darr”, “Baazigar”, “Anjaam” prior to “DDLJ”, confessed his apprehensions of starring in a romantic film. He thought the role was too ‘girlish’ for him.

In the documentary, Shah Rukh said, “I never wanted to do a romantic film. By the time I joined films, I was 26. Normally, romantic films meant you started off in college and work your way in romance and then run away with a girl or commit suicide with a girl or whatever. I thought I was too old play a romantic hero. I always thought romantic hero should be good looking. I didn’t think I am good looking. I thought romantic heroes should have a typical handsome face. I didn’t think I was handsome. I thought they have to be young. I didn’t think I was young enough. “

He also added,”Yash ji told me something. He said if you don’t do a romantic movie, you won’t be a big star. I didn’t agree with him. I said you have hardly made love stories. I didn’t do Diwale because of that. I just did Diwale because of the belief and love I had for Adi( Aditya Chopra) and Yash ji (Yash Chopra). I said I’ll do this but it’s a very girlish role for me.”

Bollywood’s most loved on-screen couple, Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan, recreated the “DDLJ” poster on the sets of ‘Dilwale’. YRF posted video that shows how the entire cast of ‘Dilwale’ celebrated 20 years of DDLJ. It was Shah Rukh’s idea to recreate the poster for the fans who have showered love and support to the entire team and this movie all these years.

Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan will be seen together in Rohit Shetty’s next movie, ‘Dilwale’.The movie is set to release in December.

The one-hour documentary features unseen footages, behind the scenes shots and interviews of Kajol, Karan Johar, Uday Chopra, who both were assistant directors in DDLJ, late Yash Chopra’s wife Pamela Chopra, Anupam Kher among others.
