Academy Awards, 2017 paid a tribute to the stars they lost in recent times and it was indeed a great honour for us to see Bollywood actor, Om Puri in the list of stars they lost in 2016. Om Puri was remembered and honoured alongside “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and Bill Paxton.
Om Puri was honoured at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony, which was held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment for his contribution to Hollywood cinema for films like ‘East Is East’, ‘Gandhi’, ‘City of Joy’. ‘Ghost and the Darkness’ and ‘Wolf’.
It was the popular ‘Friends’ actress Jennifer Aniston who introduced the segment and was visibly emotional.
A Padma Shri awardee and National Award-winner, known for his deep baritone, different acting style and a distinct face, Om Puri was also made the honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the British film industry.
He passed away at the age of 66 suffering a major cardiac arrest. His claim to fame was his groundbreaking work in films like Ardh Satya, Aakrosh and Paar and who can forget his iconic roles in films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Maachis.
This was indeed a moment of pride for Indians!
