Bollywood veteran actor Om Puri passed away this year on January 6, but the actor has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, courtesy the neighbouring country. While the whole country is still mourning the death of the legend actor, the neighbouring country – began to conjure up conspiracy theories around his death.

In a video, which dates back to January 14, Aamir Liaquat, an anchor with Pakistan’s Bol News, claimed that Puri’s ghost had been spotted in front of his Mumbai home seeking revenge against Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser.

Speaking to Spotboye.com, Om Puri’s wife Nandita Puri has finally spoken up on the viral video. Nandita Puri, (Late) Om Puri’s wife, said, “I haven’t seen the video per say. My friends told me about it. When they mentioned my first reaction was, ‘Good for them’. It’s all rubbish.”

What my sources have told me, he was given this from somebody in India in January and that time, Indian channels refused to take it. They must have realised that if they carry such a news, the nation will kill them because it is a very sensitive topic.  These are the people who want to live on other people’s success. And what is trending now by Aamir Liaquat, is extremely disgraceful and in bad taste.”

But when you try to harm films you harm a lot of other people who haven’t offended you in any way.

No exact reason is out for their separation. But 26 years of marriage has now finally ended, and it ended on a bad note. Remember the time when Nandita had written a book “Unlikely Hero: The Story of Om Puri“, where she expressed no respect or courtesy for Om Puri and preferred exposing his past relationships and making their differences public. Written and directed by Sunny Deol, who reprises his role as Mehra, this sequel leaps 25 years ahead of the 1990 film. Having served jail time, Mehra is under the constant supervision of his neurologist (Soha Ali Khan) but he’s also leading a group of do-gooders – sort of vigilantes – who override the law and bring the corrupt and criminals to book. Mehra is an inspiration to a group of four teenagers Varun, Anushka, Zoya and Rohan. But when they accidentally film the murder of a RTI activist, and Mehra’s old friend Joe D’Souza (Om Puri) by rich and powerful industrialist Bansal’s (Narendra Jha) spoilt son Kabir, their lives are suddenly threatened. They turn to Mehra for help.

Several chases, fights, elaborate action sequences on trains and in malls follow and these bits make the film tolerable. The over the top supporting actor and sundry cast are loud and a bit hammy and the screenplay is all over the place, coming to a surprisingly engaging mid-point but the post-interval half spirals around like the chopper Mehra flies around and then into Bansal’s house. The poor quality computer graphics and tedious climax with every character screaming at the same time is a letdown.

While the script and direction are patchy, ‘Ghayal Once Again’ is kept afloat by well-designed action scenes, some skillful editing and Sunny Deol who will not disappoint his fans, particularly when he puts all his might into that punch.

Ouch! Om Puri Offended By Dirty Politics Co-star Mallika Sherawat

Om-Mallika-SherawatThings seem to be going pretty bad between ‘Dirty Politics’ co-stars. Apparently, veteran actor Om Puri got offended by Mallika Sherawat’s comment. It all started at Kapil Sharma’s Comedy Nights With Kapil show, where Mallika was a guest.

During the giggles and trollings, the actress said that her co-star Om Puri had to dye his hair before the love-making scene with her in K.C. Bokadia’s film ‘Dirty Politics’. Well, Mallika is pretty well known for running around and saying the first thing that comes in her mind, of course, never meaning to hurt anybody but this comment did it and became the cause of the tiff between the two actors.

As reported by a source from the film’s crew, “Om ji was very upset with Mallika’s remark. He immediately confronted her. She apologised. But the damage was done. After that there was a coldness between them. They may not promote the film together.”

When Om Puri was asked about the incident, he admittedly said, “Yes, I did confront Mallika when I heard what she had said somewhere about me. I didn’t see the show. But people told me about it. She said it was a mistake. But what kind of a mistake is this? You put up your co-star, who is far more experienced than you, for ridicule on national television. Then you say it was a mistake?”

Ouch! Things seem to be pretty serious. Directed by K.C. Bokadia, ‘Dirty Politics’ also stars Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Ashutosh Rana along with Mallika Sherawat and Om Puri. The film is set to hit the theatres on February 13, 2015.

“Workers of a political party from Rajasthan are putting pressure on me to change the tri-colour into some other scrap of fabric,” informed K.C. Bokadia.

Dirty Politics is reportedly based on Jodhpur’s Bhanwari Devi sex scandal and K.C. Bokadia clarifies, “It has nothing to do with the tri-colour, nor is it any political party’s symbol. Also, there is no Ashoka Chakra, so essentially, it is just a piece of cloth in three different colours.”

Mallika Sherawat is playing the role of Bhanwari Devi in Dirty Politics, which also stars Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff, Govind Namdev, Ashutosh Rana and Rajpal Yadav.

    Om Puri Arrested; Gets Bail

    OMPURI03092012

MUMBAI: A lot has been happening in Om Puri’s life recently. He was allegedly “absconding before coming back to the public view after his wife, Nandita, filed a complaint against him accusing him of domestic violence. (Read story here)

Immediately, Om Puri applied for anticipatory bail. (Read story here)

But turns out now that Om Puri did not require the anticipatory bail. The Versova police has informed the court that as the charges against the actor were bailable, he need not have to apply for anticipatory bail.

Post this, Om Puri withdrew the anticipatory bail application from the court and he was granted bail at the police station itself.

Initially, after Nandita’s complaint, the Versova police had booked Om Puri under Indian Penal Code sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of the peace).

TOP MOMENTS: Bollywood’s Dahi-Handi, Shah Rukh Mania, Sonam’s Protests!!!

    TOP MOMENTS31082013

MUMBAI: It’s festival time in Bollywood in the following weeks and it begins with the dahi-handi celebrations. Several stars joined in the festivities spread across the city while the likes of Arjun Rampal, Shah Rukh Khan also attempted to break one! Meanwhile Shah Rukh Khan has also launched another of his business ventures called Kidzania. These and many more are the Top Moments this week.

Bollywood Dahi-Handi – Janmashtami is not complete without Bollywood songs and dance. And this year was no different as several stars from the tinsel town made appearances (for free or otherwise!!) at several dahi-handi festivals. Arjun Rampal (who also broke the handi with his head), Siddharth Malhotra who flashed his abs!, Aditya Roy Kapur, grooved audiences with his baseless voice! And if that wasn’t enough, the mighty likes of Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan also made appearances and enthralled audiences.

SRK Mania – Shah Rukh Khan is taking the role of a common man too seriously! Riding high on the success of his film ‘Chennai Express’, the actor was present at not one but two dahi-handi events and entertained audiences with the dialogues of his films, some dance and of course the latest trend – The Lungi Dance! The star also is taking up his role as a entrepreneur seriously as he launched ‘Kidzania’ an education-cum fun project for kids aged 4-14. The project fascinated Shah Rukh Khan when he was at Dubai and he made his mind to get it to India as well and launched it in grand style.

Sonam Kapoor Protests – Outraged by a photojournalist’s rape in Mumbai, Sonam Kapoor and a few colleagues came out to the streets of Mumbai in protest of the atrocities against women. Reprising her rebellious role from ‘Raanjhanaa’, Sonam was truly the highlight as she voiced her angst on women safety laws.

Om Puri Fiasco – Bollywood was abuzz with Om Puri having absconded at a time when his wife Nandita Puri accused him of domestic violence. The actor was seen at the Mumbai Sessions court and has got anticipatory bail in the case.

While the week began on a sad note, with dahi-handi celebrations all seems to have ended on a high! At the movies too, ‘Madras Café’ is steady with ‘Chennai Express’ still in competition.

    OMPURI290813

MUMBAI:  Bollywood actor Om Puri who has been accused of domestic violence by wife Nandita was spotted outside a Mumbai Sessions Court today.

There has been huge buzz that the actor has been absconding ever since his wife Nandita complained against the actor indulging in domestic violence. Om Puri defends his case and says he hasn’t hit his wife and shuns the allegations of having an affair with ex-wife Seema Kapoor. (Read Story HERE)

Meanwhile the court has granted anticipatory bail to the actor. Om Puri has also requested that he should be allowed to meet his son Ishaan, currently in the custody of Nandita.

On the other side, Nandita has said that with regard to the Rakhi incident, it was his ex-wife Seema who had called Om Puri up and instigated him. She also said that after being hit, she lodged a complaint with the police before heading to Cooper hospital where she nearly passed out because she had been hit on her neck.

Nandita also revealed that Seema had been using their house as her official address because of which mails addressed to Seema were coming to their home. Seema was also apparently pressuring him to remarry her.

Nandita also doesn’t believe that she is an aggressive woman. “I have tried to stop him and push him away when he attacks me. All I can do is put my hand on his chest to ensure that he does not get close. If this is what he terms aggression, I think he has got the definition wrong. And as far as expletives go, I may have used the F-word but his language needs to be heard to be believed,” she said.

Will there be more action we will see in the Om Puri-Nandita Puri drama, time will tell. But for now its time to make some peace!

Om Puri Speaks About Wife Nandita’s Accusation

    OM28082013

MUMBAI: Om Puri, who was allegedly “absconding” after his wife filed a domestic violence complaint against him has spoken out about the entire issue.

The veteran actor said that he had no choice but to seek out anticipatory bail and he also felt that the legal system went soft on women in such cases. He also mentioned that he had never hit Nandita with any stick and that he never had any stick at home. He did have a decorative cane at home, initially bought by Nandita herself, but he was ready to send it to the forensic lab to get it tested. “There is a bamboo cane at home, a decorative item purchased by Nandita. I am ready to send that for forensic tests,” the actor said.

Om Puri said that on the particular day that Nandita filed the complaint, she had approached him to pay her Rs 10,000 for the ten girls who had tied a rakhi for their son Ishaan. She also asked Rs 3000 for a mobile phone which she had gifted to the maid as the maid too had tied a rakhi to Ishaan. That’s when Om Puri put his foot down and the matter escalated from there. He said, “I put my foot down. The next thing I knew I was accused of domestic violence. I never thought our marriage will come to such a sorry pass.”

Om Puri said that over the past many years, Nandita used to spend her lot as her tastes were elitist compared to his tastes that were simple. He also believes that their son Ishaan is under her influence. “I am going to request the Court to provide me access to him on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays,” he said.

At the same time Om Puri denied any allegations of having a relationship currently with ex-wife Seema. “At the age of 64? I can’t write properly, my signature has changed because my hands shake. How will I indulge in adultery?” he shockingly said.

Whichever way this goes, the outcome doesn’t look good. We hope everyone comes out in good shape.

After Wife Accuses Him Of Domestic Violence, Om Puri Goes Missing

    OM27082013

MUMBAI: Legendary actor Om Puri has apparently gone absconding after his wife Nandita has allegedly filed a complaint against him last Thursday for inflicting domestic violence on her.

According to the Versova police, Nandita has stated in her statement that Om Puri threatened her with a stick and beat her too. Harishchandra Parmale, senior police inspector of Versova police station said, “We have registered the complaint and booked the actor for voluntarily causing hurt by a dangerous weapon or means under Section 324, criminal intimidation under Section 506, and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman under Section 509 of the IPC.”

Nandita has said that the problems in their marriage started when Om Puri’s first wife Seema re-entered their life in 2008. Om Puri was married to Seema for three years starting from 1990.

The hatred further intensified when Nandita wrote a biography of Om Puri titled Unlikely Hero: The Story Of Om Puri wherein she revealed details like Om Puri’s affair with his maid.

The police had gone to Om Puri’s home to arrest him on Friday, but the actor was not at home. “Om Puri is absconding at present. We will arrest him as soon as we trace him,” the senior police inspector added.

Standing Ovation For ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ At Venice Film Festival

VENICE: When Mira Nair’s ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ opened 69th Venice Film Festival, the film was applauded with a ten minute standing ovation.

To pass on her compliments, a diminutive old lady kept asking others around where she could find the director of the film she had just seen. After finding out, she came towards Mira’s table and held both her hands. In her smooth Italian accent, she said, “I am Gillo Pontecorvo’s widow, and I have come to tell you that Gillo lives in you.”

Interestingly, when Mira Nair was recently asked about something that inspires her as a creative person, she had expressed, “There is one film that has inspired me for decades—the only film in the world I wished I had directed, a path breaking film that taught me to show both sides of a conflict with equal intelligence, pain and love. This is Gillo Pontecorvo’s great classic about the fight for Algerian Independence: The Battle of Algiers.”

Meanwhile PVR Pictures has pushed the India release date of ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ to May 17th 2013. The movie was earlier set to release on May 10th.

Starring Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland, Liev Schreiber, Riz Ahmed, Shabana Azmi and Om Puri, the film is the story of a young man chasing corporate success on Wall Street. Post September 2011 tragedy in America, he finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family’s homeland.

HOLLYWOOD: PVR Pictures has released the first trailer of its upcoming film ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’. Directed by Mira Nair of ‘The Namesake’ fame, the film is a political thriller starring Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland, Live Schreiber, Riz Ahmed, Om Puri and Shabana Azmi.

‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ is based on the novel by the same name by Mohsin Hamid which talks about a Pakistani man working on Wall Street.

The trailer begins with a journalist (Liev Schreiber) interviewing Khan, about the kidnapping of an American citizen where we hear Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) saying: “Looks can be deceiving; I’m a lover of America although I was raised to feel very Pakistani.” Khan then describes how he came to the US and took a job on Wall Street, only to have his life change after the attacks on the Twin Towers.

‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ follows the life of a Pakistani man, who loves and lives in the US for several years before he gets caught in the throes of post 9/11 climate of the US and the turbulence it caused for many Pakistani Americans trying to figure out their identities and their allegiances. He finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, the enduring call of his family’s homeland, and the effects that his dilemma has on the people he works with and the woman he’s grown to love.

The trailer ends with Changez Khan saying: “Yes I’m Pakistani, Yes I’m Muslim, but that’s not all I am.”

The film is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher and opened the 69th Venice International Film Festival in August 2012. ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ is set to release in April this year.

REVEALED: Mallika Sherawat’s Look in ‘Dirty Politics’

    More photos

MUMBAI: The usually glamorous and revealing Mallika Sherawat now has a new look for her upcoming film ‘Dirty Politics’.

Clad in a red and ochre coloured homely sari, Mallika Sherawat looked the part of the demure daughter in her new look. We caught her in three very unique poses; certainly a first for the ‘Murder’ actress.  A classic hand-waving politician’s pose, another deep yellow-orange sunshine sari, and finally a palms-folded pose completed Mallika’s transformation into a de-glam politician. In the final photo from the photoshoot, we spotted Mallika playing demure bahu to veteran actor Om Puri, who was himself clad in an ethnic aubergine kurta-pyjama.

‘Dirty Politics’ is an upcoming film by K.C Bokadia, which stars Mallika Sherawat, Om Puri and Ashutosh Rana in pivotal roles. The film is loosely based on the Bhanwri Devi rape case and reportedly has some tense, dramatic moments. Mallika also revealed that her role is that of a Rajasthani street dancer, whose horrific murder triggers off a series of events leading to a high-level investigation.

    “Bowled Over By Arjun Rampal”

Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol and Prakash Jha on the sets of 'Chakravyuh'
Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol and Prakash Jha on the sets of ‘Chakravyuh’

Very few actors are exceptionally generous about their colleagues’ works and not afraid to show their appreciation.

Om Puri who has a small part in Prakash Jha’s ‘Chakravyuh’ was so impressed by Arjun Rampal’s performance in the film that he called up Arjun’s wife Mehr Jessia to ask her about the nature of the food being served on the Rampals’ dining table.

Mehr, we hear, was zapped by Om’s rather personal question before she cottoned on to the seasoned actor’s meaning.

When one asked Om about this unusual way of showing his appreciation for a co-actor Om said, “I’ve watched Arjun’s growth as an actor and I am completely bowled over by his progress. When I called Arjun I told him I didn’t want to speak to him but his wife. When she came on the line I asked her what food she serves on the table to make Arjun such a wonderful professional. One has to be happy healthy and complete in mind and body to evolve so well as an actor.”

Considering Om’s own rather poor record in domesticity one wonders to what we must attribute his amazing track record as an actor!

As for his own rather abbreviated role in ‘Chakravyuh’ Om retorted nonchalantly, “Doesn’t matter how big or small my role is. What I like is being part of a film that is so sociopolitically relevant.”

REVIEW: ‘Chakravyuh’ – Could Cinema Change Mindsets?

    'Chakravyuh' - Poster
    ‘Chakravyuh’ – Poster

Becket beckons Bollywood once again. The immortal French play by Jean Anouilh was furnished a sensitive renew-ability by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in ‘Namak Haraam’ 38 years ago and then again much later by Govind Nihalani in ‘Dev’.

Now the stories of two friends separated by caste, creed and ideology who are torn apart by their irreconcilable socio-political differences, is given a seriously spunky spin by Prakash Jha.

Straightaway, let’s get to the point (much in the same vein that the film does). This is Prakash Jha’s most resolutely etched and firmly grounded drama since ‘Mrityudand’, and a work way superior to his last two films ‘Raajneeti’ and ‘Aarakshan’ both of which suffered to some extent by being scattered in intent and pulled in too many directions.

While here again in ‘Chakravyuh’ we witness Jha’s penchant for whipping up a frenzy of crowd sequences, mob fury, gargantuan political rallies and fleets of red-light-topped government cars winding their way urgently through dusty roadways, never does the narrative lose hold of the plot’s center.

Jha is in full command of his wide-angled canvas, never allowing the storytelling to become a slave to the political ideology that fans and fuels his wound-up stressed-out characters as they’re cast into reluctant roles of outcasts, into a frenetic bundle of activities that define and somewhere rearrange the rapidly-mutating sociopolitical synergy of Indian democracy.

Jha enters the dark largely-unexposed world of the Naxalites fighting for their land and dignity, braving all odds including an apathetic government, corrupt and sadistic cops and bureaucrats, betrayal within their own Naxal ranks and avaricious land-grabbing entrepreneurs (and here we have Kabir Bedi and his wimpy Yankee-twanged son as easily-recognizable global ‘entree-players’ ruthlessly maneuvering to usurp the Naxals from their rightful land and property).

It’s a complex, morally ambivalent world of arbitrary treachery and strained loyalty. The well-researched material is culled into a condensed but brightly illuminated screenplay (by Prakash Jha, Anjum Rajabali and Sagar Pandya) that brings out the basic theme of monstrously growing socioeconomic inequality in our society through the characters of two friends.

Adil Khan (Arjun Rampal) and Kabir (Abhay Deol) are separated by their differing attitude to sociopolitical injustice but united in their combat against corruption, the path chosen by the friends diverge, unify and then split apart in ways that keep us riveted to the devastatingly tragic finale. There’s also a girl between them, a colleague from the college days (Esha Gupta, a miscast).

Mercifully there’s no love triangle happening here. Thank God for a cinema that sidesteps the trite clichés.

If anything, the film should have been longer. There should have been more space for the Adil-Kabir friendship to be nurtured. The same goes for the delicately but rather hastily-drawn relationship that grows between the loyalty-challenged Kabir and the spirited Naxal girl Juhi (newcomer Anjali Patil).

But then Prakash Jha has always been shy of dwelling on feelings. He only slows us glimpses into his characters’ hearts before pulling back ruthlessly to allow them to go about their jobs as professionals who have to travel far beyond their call of duty.

In a film about social injustice and the ire that it fosters, it would be unjust to give away the plot. Suffice it to say Jha copes with the complex themes of love, loyalty, friendship and betrayal in a language that never resorts to gutter-level sniping and combative belligerence just to appear trendily earthy.

Armed with an explosive plot that tests the loyalty of two friends as they are pitched in an ideological battle Jha’s narrative remains unwavering in its allegiance to a powerful content-execution and a voice that’s raised in protest without getting shrill or hysterical.

The crucial confrontation sequence towards the end is a make-or-break moment in the narrative. Thanks to the brilliantly-written words and the restrain with which the two actors put their viewpoints forward, the sequence scorches the screen .

While Abhay Deol once again after ‘Shanghai’ displays remarkable temperance and understanding in playing a complex hard-to-pin-down character it’s Arjun Rampal as a cop doing a job that could not just kill him but put a whole community of people’s lives into danger, who once again surprises us with his deep understanding of his character’s sociopolitical context. Not for a second does he give away his Malabar Hills antecedents while getting into the skin bones heart and soul of the cop’s character. The time-tested Manoj Bajpai and Om Puri have smaller but significant parts a Naxal leaders.

  • REVIEW: Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal

    REVIEW: Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal

    Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal
    Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal

If you can overlook the outrageous suggestion that Nana Patekar could be Om Puri’s son, then you’re in for some clean, healthy, wholesome and engaging fun in this comic drama about a stranger who walks into a Catholic village and changes malfunctional lives with his positivity.

Does the reformation in the Church theme ring a bell? Films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee – “Anand”, “Bawarchi”, “Buddha Mil Gaya” and “Khubsoorat” – attempted the same theme of the whimsical but endearing stranger who walks in with an eccentric agenda to change jaded lives.

Priyadarshan’s parodic populace is a city of eccentricity. Rural or urban, the characters are whimsical, stubborn, and oddly out of step with the socio-political reality of the world that they seem to inhabit from the fringes without being able to position themselves in the mainstream.

“Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal” (KDM) gives us Priyan’s people at their quirkiest. There is a farmer Om Puri who lives here with his wife (Sona Nair), two daughters and a wastrel of a son (played with superb slothfulness by Shreyas Talpade) in whose life comes a dark brooding stranger Nana Patekar who be any of many things – a long-lost brother, an unwanted bother, a ghost from another world, a blast from the past, a foodie who clean-sweeps all the food on the tablefast! Leaving Om Puri’s family aghast.

It is interesting to see how Priyadarshan brings into play a small church-based village community’s affinity to religion, courtship and domestic politics. Here is a village sustaining itself at the grassroots with spirited hilarity, often self-directed.

Though a little tongue-in-cheek if not altogether blasphemous, I was tickled by the heroine’s female bodyguard (Pratima Kazmi)’s one-sided passion for the priest played with Asrani in an ill-fitting cassock. This audacious plot-track was more outrageously comical than newbie Madhurima Bannerjee’s endless courtship with the eminently unlikeable wimp (Shreyas).

This isn’t the first Priyadarshan film where the pampered heiress is protected from male attention by her slew of bullying brothers. Earlier Kareena Kapoor was similarly guarded from Akshaye Khanna’s attention in “Hulchal”.

Recurrent themes often give Priyadarshan comedies a sinking sense of sameness. A remake of a Malayalam film “Marykundoro Kunjaado”, KDM is one of Priyadarshan’s better potboilers in recent times.

He hasn’t been able to do away with a regional flavour in the story. The cloistered gossip-mongering Keral village may seem odd to Hindi-speaking audiences. But the film has been shot by R. Ganesh in a beautiful lakeside township. There are lush images of fields and meadows. The climactic chase catches Nana and Shreyas running through a harvest-ready field in the dead of the night. It’s an arresting image, framed and shot with care.

Though Neeraj Vora’s dialogues have seen better digs, they capture the ethos of eccentric antics well. The actors are all in the mood to have fun.

Tucked away in this rumbustious drama of mistaken identity and godforsaken raillery is a message on trust, belief and honesty. All of this is put forward with zero dependence on vulgarity.

The double meaning is restricted to the ambivalence of the characters. The principal actors specially duly deadpan Nana; blissfully and brazenly self-serving Shreyas; incredibly unselfconscious Om Puri, wickedly ironic Paresh and Neera Vora – a scream as a coffin maker who prays for the dying to be dead – get into the swing of things. They lend a layering to the laughter.

An interesting film, and far superior to the prolific Priyadarshan’s other recent comedies like “De Dana Dan”, “Khatta Meetha” and “Malamaal Weekly”, a prequel to KDM.

Mallika Sherawat To Play Bhanwari Devi In ‘Dirty Politics’

Mallika has now been cast opposite the seasoned actor in K C Bokadia’s Dirty Politics, a film based on the alleged murder of the nurse Bhanwari Devi allegedly by a topnotch politician of Rajasthan.

MUMBAI: It was during the time when Om Puri did an item song with Mallika Sherawat in Bin Bulaye Baraat that he had raved about the oomphy lady.

“Contrary to her image she is so decent, she should be called Mallika Sharaafat,” Om had exulted, expressing a wish to “work at length” with the shareef Sherawat.

It seems someone up there heard On Puri. Mallika has now been cast opposite the seasoned actor in K C Bokadia’s Dirty Politics, a film based on the alleged murder of the nurse Bhanwari Devi allegedly by a topnotch politician of Rajasthan.

While Om plays the politician, Mallika is cast as the temptress who seduces the politician and then gets sucked into a murky political game culminating in her murder.

Apparently Mallika was Bokadia’s first choice for the role. But the remuneration played the villain.

Says a source close to the project, “Mallika quoted a fee that was way too high for Bokadia’s budget. Every actor in the film from Om Puri to Jackie Shroff and Atul Kulkrani is working at a subsidized rate. But Mallika wouldn’t budge on her price. Finally Bokadia did something really smart. He sent Mallika 20 mins of the shot footage to impress on Mallika now central she would be to the dramatic conflict.”

Mallika saw the footage and was bowled over. She apparently agreed to compromise on her price.

Producer-director Bokadia confirms Mallika’s presence in the film. “I did have some problems in convincing her. But she has finally agreed. Because her role is very very powerful. Mallika plays a Rajasthani street dancer whose murder triggers off a high-level investigation.”

Bokadia has coverted the nurse’s character to a Rajasthani street dancer to accommodate Mallika’s oomph quotient into the plot. “I’m giving her three potential chartbusters composed by Sanjeev-Darshan (sons of retired composer Shravan) to dance to. One of the songs Mere ghagre ne ghamaasan kiya would set the screen, street and stage—wherever Mallika performs it—on fire.”

Apparently Mallika would be taking lessons in traditional Rajasthani dancing from actual street performers in Rajasthan to get the dance movements, down to every twirl, just right.

Bokadia doesn’t deny the Bhanwari Devi angle for Mallika’s role. “Mallika’s character is inspired by Bhanwari Devi. But we’ve created another chain of circumstances for Mallika’s character’s murder. And by the way, she is named Anokhi Devi.”

Sources close to the project say the changed name and profession for the Rajasthani politician’s torrid scandalous involvement with a beautiful woman are being done to avert legal trouble for a film based on scandal in Rajasthan that rocked parliament and shocked the junta.

But then shockers from Sherawat are no longer a surprise.
