The pretty lady, who is famous for her work in films like Benaam, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Parineeta and others, was a consistent performer, who gave her life to cinema. Predominantly working in Bollywood and Bengali films, her beauty and grace was the stuff of legend.

Moushumi Chatterjee was born in Calcutta, West Bengal, to an armyman father and a judge grandfather. She began her career, like many of her contemporaries, in Bengali cinema. Her first film was the Bengali hit, Balika Badhu, which was directed by Tarun Majumdar.

Then, in 1972, Moushumi Chatterjee starred in her very first Hindi film- Anuraag, which was subsequently a blockbuster. Her success in her debut Bollywood film paved the way for the offers, which came flooding in. She starred with Shashi Kapoor in Naina, Vinod Khanna in Kachche Dhaage, Vinod Mehra in Uss Paar, and Amitabh Bachchan in Benaam.

Her most successful pairing was with film star Vinod Mehra, with whom she worked in 10 films. Moushumi Chatterjee’s other on-screen lovers were Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, and Sanjeev Kumar.

Once she married Jayant Mukherjee, her career understandably took a back seat. Jayant is the son of famed music composer Hemant Kumar. She did do several films after marriage though, but mainly as supporting roles and motherly roles.

In 2006, Moushumi Chatterjee made a comeback to cinema, with Tanuja Chandra’s Zindaggi Rocks, and she even did the Indo-Canadian production, Bollywood/Hollywood in 2003.

The elegant lady has scarcely been seen in films since then, however we wish the beautiful Moushumi Chatterjee a very happy birthday!
