December 14, 2013, marks a date that is special for Karan Johar because his blockbuster film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham turned twelve years old. December 14, 2001 saw an dream ensemble on celluloid, something every director would love to direct, every producer would aspire to cast and every fan would love to see in the same frame.
Yes, we are talking about Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor.
A very nostalgic and emotional Karan wrote on twitter, “12 years of K3G. My dad’s favourite movie. He always cried when he saw it, and said SRK and Amitabh Bachchan reminded him of his dad and him.”
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham brought back the real life couple: Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan once again after a gap of almost ten years. The last one saw them sharing the same screen space was in Yash Chopra’s Silsila way back in 1981. K3G also immortalized the character Poo, that was essayed by Kareena Kapoor who till date has the hangover of the role.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was Karan’s second film as a director post the astounding success of his debut film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in the year 1998.
According to Karan, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was frothy and bubble-gummish while Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was classy and sophisticated.
The song Deewana Hai Dekho that featured Hrithik and Kareena was filmed at the Great Court of the Blenheim Palace, thus becoming the first Indian film to have been shot there. Another song sequence Suraj Hua Maddham, that involved Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan was shot with the backdrop of the Pyramids of Giza in the city of Cairo in Egypt, again a first for an Indian film.
Karan Johar took almost eighteen months to wrap up the shoot of his ambitious project and a book entitled The Making Of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was released a few days prior to the theatrical release of the film and it contained interviews concerning the producer, director, photographers, art director, cast and crew.
Here’s wishing the entire team of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham our heart felt congratulations.
