MUMBAI: While UTV Motion Pictures ‘Barfi!’ has been selected by the Film Federation of India to represent the country in the foreign films segment at the 85th Oscar Academy Awards, the film is also creating new records at the Box Office.

Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and south actress Ileana D’Cruz, the film has grossed Rs 100 crore in 10 days including its overseas collections. This puts Barfi! well in the league of other biggies like Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger, Agneepath and comedy masalas Bol Bachchan and Rowdy Rathore.

Two days after being announced as India’s official entry to the Oscars in the foreign language film category, theatre owners have increased the number of shows of the ‘Academy Award Entrant’.

The love story of a deaf, mute boy with an autistic girl and an emotionally torn woman, Barfi! opened in approximately 700 screens in India on September 14.

Single screen as well as multiplex exhibitors have now decided to revise the show schedule of Barfi! in their theatres; with effect from today there will be an increase in the number of shows of the film.

“We are increasing about two shows at every Cinemax branch with effect from Monday. This will not affect other films. We will adjust the extra Barfi! shows by changing the timings from September 24,” confirmed Head of Marketing, Cinemax Pvt Ltd, Girish Wankhede.

Founder, Gaiety Galaxy theatre complex, Manoj Desai said, “I’m not pulling off Barfi! from Galaxy. It will continue to run four shows at least till October 4. Earlier, I had planned to withdraw the film or reduce the number of shows from September 28.”

Critically acclaimed, the film has beat 19 other films, including Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani, and Vicky Donor to be selected as India’s official entry.

Kollywood blockbuster Eega has also lost the Oscars race to ‘Barfi!’.
