MUMBAI: Gauri Shinde’s debut film ‘English Vinglish’ marking the comeback of Bollywood actress Sridevi after a 14 year hiatus, has received a poor response on its first day.

Also featuring French star Mehdi Nebbou, Adil Hussain, Priya Anand and Amitabh Bachchan in a cameo — the film released this Friday (October 5) with a soft occupancy of 25%.

This is surprising because expectations from the movie were quite high.

The superb reviews released at least a day prior to the film gave director Gauri Shinde and Sridevi nothing less than 4 stars. Also there has been much curiosity to see the queen of yesteryear reign on screen again.

The total collections of Friday are in the range of Rs 25 million (Rs 2.5 crore) net, with most business coming in through multiplexes.

The evening shows reflected a pick up, indicating that weekend figures might show a notable jump.

Unfortunately, ‘English Vinglish’ does not have any weekday holiday bonus in its favor like ‘Oh My God’ did on Gandhi Jayanti last week.

However, the fact that it is a family oriented film and has a lot of positive word of mouth going for it should bring up figures to a decent number.
