MUMBAI: Last week’s two new releases – the Farhan Akhtar – Deepika Padukone starrer Karthik Calling Karthik and Amitabh Bachchan – Ben Kingsley starrer Teen Patti – haven’t had a super-duper opening at the box office.
While Karthik Calling Karthik did a net business of approximately Rs 110 million (Rs 11 crore) at the box office in India in four days, Teen Patti did a net business of approximately Rs 35 million (Rs 3.5 crore) till Monday.
Occupancy levels of the movies were in the range of 20 – 35 per cent over the weekend for both the movies. That Monday was a holiday in India due to Holi didn’t add much to the cause of the two movies at the box office.
On the other hand, My Name Is Khan – the Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol starrer, which is directed by Karan Johar, has done a net business of approximately Rs 640 million (Rs 64 crore) till date, with the gross business at Rs 1.02 billion (Rs 102.2 crores) in India alone. MNIK has also become the highest grossing Bollywood film in the Middle East at $3.3 million.
It remains to be seen what the fate of the two movies will be over the coming days as there are three new movies lined up for release this Friday. While Warner Bros will release the Ajay Devgn – Konkona Sen starrer Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Studio 18 will release Road, Movie starring Abhay Deol. A small horror flick Rokkk is also lined up for release on 5 March.
