Box Office: Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey disappoints; new releases tank

MUMBAI: Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey starring Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone saw a dismal opening weekend. The net box office collections for the movie in the first three days was a mere Rs 32.5 million (Rs 3.25 crore).

This can be termed as the most disastrous opening weekend for a movie with A-list stars. The movie’s first day net collections were only Rs 10 million (Rs 1 crore) across India.

On the other hand, the opening of Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakht Charitra 2 and the comic caper Phas Gaye Re Obama was also poor. While Rakth Charitra 2, opened better in the South, the film failed to find audience in the rest of the centers. Even though Warner Bros. Pictures India’s Phas Gaya Re Obama has been appreciated by the audience, the opening for this film too has been weak with net collections of Rs 12.5 million (Rs 1.25 crore) over the weekend.

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Warner Bros. Pictures India deputy managing director (Theatrical) Denzil Dias said, "We planned a controlled release for Phas Gaye Re Obama with 80 35mm prints and 100 digital prints across India."

The three films opened to about 20 – 25 per cent occupancy. Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey has been a big disappointment, as expectations were high. Being an Ashutosh Gowariker film, multiplexes were expecting a good turnout but the movie has not gone down well with the audience.

Fox Star India’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader saw a better opening than the rest with approximately 35 – 40 per cent occupancy.

Previous releases like Break Ke Baad and Guzaarish also saw a major drop at the box office this weekend. All eyes are now on No Problem and Band Baajaa Baaraat that releases this week.
