MUMBAI: Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar’s latest directorial venture, ‘Student Of The Year’, produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chilies Entertainment, has fared surprisingly well at the Box Office so far, since its release on 19 October.
The film stars newcomers Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, along with veteran star Rishi Kapoor in a supporting role.
The first day collection saw an impressive collection of approximately Rs 90 million (Rs 9 crore) net. This is an extremely good number, considering the film features newcomers and has no major A-list star.
‘Student Of The Year’ saw its maximum business from multiplexes. The multiplex collections are similar to Day 1 collections of Anurag Basu’s super successful film ‘Barfi!’.
This also despite the film opening during the Navratri period, where audiences are otherwise occupied with the festivities. The three day weekend total of the film is in the range of Rs 285 million (Rs 28.5 crore) net.
Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab and Bangalore are the top performers for the film.
Monday again has shown strong trending with a collection of approximately 50 million (Rs 5 crore) net.
Tuesday being a part holiday due to Maha Navami and Wednesday a full holiday on account of Dusshera should bring in a surge for ‘Student Of The Year’.
All three newbies, Varun, Siddharth and Alia, have been praised for their performances. The trio has been appreciated by critics and audiences alike for their dancing and acting skills.
The film boasts of typical Karan-Johar style exotic larger-than-life locales, exquisite designer-wear for the threesome, foot-tapping music and dance songs (including the remake of the Nadia Hussain hit single “Disco Deewane”) and large doses of drama and comedy in Johar’s inimitable style.
The good reviews offer much hope for the film.
