MUMBAI: Universal Pictures’ ‘Mama’, presented by Guillermo del Toro, is a Spanish-Canadian horror film co-written and directed by Andres Muschietti. The story revolves around two orphan girls who were abandoned and later miraculously rescued.
Starring Hollywood actress Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nelisse, the film is based on Muschietti’s 2008 Spanish-language short film. A haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods, and were found five years later – completely covered in dirt, hopping around on all fours, and anorexic. With the absence of any human contact whatsoever, the sisters seemed to have developed animalistic behaviors.
The chidren’s dead father’s brother played by Nikolaj and his girlfriend played by Jessica decide to rehabilitate the girls. They begin a new life, but someone or something that kept them alive all these years follows them to their new home.
The promo promises an emotional and scary journey for every viewer. Jessica Chastain delves into the role of the step-mom who develops a maternal instinct and faces her children’s traumas as well as the evil haunting them. The constant repetition of the word ‘mama’ is definitely spooky but gives out the suspense.
Produced by J. Miles Dale and Barbara Muschietti, ‘Mama’ is set to release in India on 8 February 2013.
