Trailer Review: Scarlett Johansson Is “Superhuman” As Lucy

lucy Main coverScarlett Johansson, fresh off her recent stint of successful films in Hollywood, is not one to rest on her laurels alone. The gritty, sexy actress is now pushing the envelope, and attempting something wholly “different”, in her next film- a science-fiction thriller called Lucy.

Scarlett plays a drug mule in the film, who is unwittingly caught in a drug racket, and forced into transporting lethal chemical substances. Things go awry when the chemicals begin to leak into her body, rendering her with almost superhuman powers.

The trailer of Lucy, directed by acclaimed French director Luc Besson, is edgy and fast-paced. The scene opens with Scarlett having no memory of what transpired the previous night, and waking up foggy and befuddled. Then, she is dragged into the drug scam, where she is beaten and coerced into being a drug mule for a Chinese mafia boss.

The trailer itself is pretty graphic, with scenes of violence and rape dominating the proceedings. Scarlett is shown being beaten up by the drug lords. Scarlett then discovers the drug has entered her bloodstream, and enabled her to use 28% of her cerebral capacity, over and above the normal 10%. She is then shown getting in touch with a college professor, whose research she reads over the internet within a span of a few hours.

The premise of the film seems similar to that of Bradley Cooper starrer Limitless, which also deals with the power of harnessing chemicals to increase one’s brain capacity. The achievements once this happen seem similar to the previous film, with Scarlett picking up spoken and written Mandarin in a matter of an hour, and being able to use her enhanced mental capacity to stun humans into submission.

The theme of the film is exploring what the human mind is capable of. As Morgan Freeman, who plays the professor in the film, sums it up in the trailer: “It is estimated that human beings use only 10% of the capacity of the mind. Imagine if we could use 100%. Interesting things will begin to happen then.”

All in all, the film looks marvellous, and it will be wonderful to see the usually pretty and sensual Scarlett attempt something so entirely out of her comfort zone. She seems more than believable as Lucy, a girl who will now use the caustic situation to her advantage.

Lucy, which also stars Morgan Freeman and Lee Chun, releases on August, 08 2014, and is sure to take the global box office by storm.

  • REVIEW: Iron Man 3 – A Must Watch For Superhero Lovers

REVIEW: Iron Man 3 – A Must Watch For Superhero Lovers

There are a few films that come along every few years which you wish would not end. Iron Man 3 is one such film that keeps you wishing for more. Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as millionaire inventor/ businessman Tony Stark with his superhero alter-ego, Iron Man.

In the third in the franchise, he suits up to take on an elusive Osama bin Laden style baddie dubbed Mandarin. Sir Ben Kingsley adds a tasty touch to the film as he savours the part of the bearded madman Mandarin, facing off with Downey who, as per usual, laces his role with humour and cheekiness.

The Mandarin is ruthlessly attacking key American locations and giving the American army and authorities a massive runaround. But when Stark’s head of security, Happy (John Favreau) gets injured in an attack, the issue becomes personal for Iron Man. To make matters worse, the love of his life and the head of his company, Pepper Potts’ (Gwyneth Paltrow) life is also in danger.

At the same time a creepily blond businessman, Aldrich Killian, brings along tech that has far-reaching effects. Guy Pearce, not seen often enough on screen, adds another layer of wicked slightly over-the-top drama to director Shane Black’s film.

Take this cast, add a wardrobe filled with uniquely individualized Iron Man suits, and bring in a sidekick in the form of Colonel Rhodes (Don Cheadle), finish it off with explosive action scenes and visual effects and you are left thirsting for more. Here’s some fun trivia: the voice of Jarvis, the computerized voice that manages the suits, belongs to Paul Bettany.

For Downey Jr, Kingsley in one of his most memorable roles since Gandhi, and for the love of superheroes and comic books, go see Iron Man 3 now!

  • Shoot For Salman Khan’s ‘Mental’ Comes To A Stand-still

Shoot For Salman Khan’s ‘Mental’ Comes To A Stand-still

LAVASA: Salman Khan who is currently shooting action sequences in Lavasa for brother Sohail Khan’s ‘Mental’ is facing a lot of trouble keeping an action free environment on the sets.

Salman Khan’s shoot of ‘Mental’ in Lavasa has come to a screeching halt over simmering tension between action artistes from Mumbai and Hyderabad. The spat is over allegations that the production team is biased towards Bollywood performers. Trouble erupted between the two sides over the weekend when the 30-strong south-based group discovered there were only three southern fighters for every seven from Mumbai, not to mention they were being paid 50 per cent less than their local peers.

The disgruntled artistes put their foot down and refused to shoot until their demands were met, and even called up Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) officials in Mumbai, but only to be told that their argument held no water.

Finally, two senior officials of Film Employees’ Federation of South India (FEFSI), Shiva and Vijayan (President of FEFSI), were flown into Mumbai to help resolve the dispute. However, the FEFSI and FWICE officials were unable to reach a conclusion.

A Source from FWICE said:  “When they shoot Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Kannada films in Mumbai, we ensure there are more representatives from the South in every department. Their demand for equal representation is unjustified.”

Salman and Sohail Khan failed to make Shiva and Vijayan understand their approach towards the artists which resulted in the duo returning back with the entire south group of action artists. Now Salman and Sohail are left with nothing other than a great location and inadequate number of fighters to shoot the action sequence with.

A source from the film unit said, “The entire action sequence has come to a standstill over this imbroglio. Our worst fears are coming true. If we don’t get competent fighters from Mumbai to fill in the vacancies, we may have to revisit Lavasa at a later date to shoot the action scenes.”

A senior FWICE official, on condition of anonymity, said, “Salman and Sohail will either have to appoint some fighters from Mumbai, who can join them immediately. Or they will have to wind up the schedule without much of the action, which will be contrary to the original plan. Again, it’s not going to be easy getting the kind of fighters they want from Mumbai at such short notice.”

Amusingly, Salman and Vijayan have been friends for a long time now. Vijayan was the ‘Chief Fight Master’ in many of Salman’s recent hits including ‘Wanted’, ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Bodyguard’. It was only after ‘Bodyguard’ that Vijayan went on to become the FEFSI President. Vijayan’s decision regarding the Southern action artists marks a big fallout between Salman and him.

LOS ANGELES: Brad Pitt is looking stunning on the cover of the new issue Entertainment Weekly.

Right now Brad Pitt is in full-on promotional mode to promote his forthcoming Zombie Thriller ‘World War Z’

Making a Zombie Thriller is never easy, not even if you are Brad Pitt. Here’s what the ‘Fight Club’ actor shared with the Magazine:

When asked what goes into making a Zombie Thriller he said: “These movies are very intricate puzzles, and you have to keep winding the mechanisms and then trigger them all at just the right time. We give so much more credence to the end-of-the-year dramas. In these movies you’re triggering emotions, too—a thrill response—but they are far more calibrated. You’ve got to be a bit of a technician.”

He went on further about ‘World War z’: “This unprecedented threat comes along, and it’s going to end everything and everybody unless someone comes up with an answer. The interesting thing is how different those answers are and the way those choices lead to power shifts and life-and-death consequences.”

‘World War Z’ is based on the best-selling book by the same name written by Max Brooks. After a bidding war with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company ‘Appian Way’, Brad Pitt ‘Plan B Entertainment’ secured the screen rights to the novel in 2007. It took six years to develop and shoot, and a carousel of writers had their hands on the script before the project ever moved into production.

The script changes called for five weeks of reshoots — not to mention an extensive portion of the film shot in Budapest ending up on the cutting room floor. “Well, you remember that at the time I was really interested in a more political film, using the zombie trope as a kind of Trojan horse for asking: ‘What would happen to socio-political lines if there was a pandemic like this? Who would be on top? Who would be the powerful countries and who would be the most vulnerable?’ We wanted to really explore that, but it was just too much. We got bogged down in it; it was too much to explain. It gutted the fun of what these films are meant to be.”

The film is directed by Marc Foster and the screenplay is by Matthew Michael Carnahan. It is produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Ian Bryce and is starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale and Matthew Fox.

‘World War Z’ is going to hit the theatres on 21 June 2013.
