From Gutthi To Chutki; Sunil Grover Is Made In India

Guthi-9[tps_footer]Sunil Grover, who rose to fame with the character Gutthi on Comedy Nights With Kapil, is ready with his own show tilted Mad In India and the character that he is set to play is Chutki.

While Manish Paul anchors the show, joining Sunil on Mad In India are Dolly Ahluwalia, Khayali Sharan, Rajbir Kaur, Siddharth Jadav, and a new comic find Suri.

Gearing up for the comic challenge ahead, Sunil says, “The idea is to feature an assortment of comic talent, established and new. We’ve got relatively fresh comic actors like Rajbir and Suri alongside established names like Dolly Ahluwalia and Siddhath Jadhav.”

Sunil is very clear that he should not be compared with Kapil’s, but then he is ready for it. “Of course there will be comparisons between the two shows. They both occupy the same smiley space. But my endeavour is not to be one-up on Kapil. In fact I’d like viewers to watch both our shows. The idea is to bring laughter into viewers’ lives as long as I can do so without resorting to vulgarity or cheapness, I am happy,” states Sunil.

Sunil’s seven year old son Mohan is most excited about his transition from Gutthi to Chutki. “He is my biggest fan. He loves my comedy. Initially when I started playing Gutthi his friends in our apartment block used to tease him. He came to me and one day looking very disturbed said, ‘Papa, don’t play a girl.’ Being so young and impressionable he was confused. But then he began to understand what I was doing as an actor. My biggest victory was when he came and told me he didn’t want me to stop playing the various characters, male or female, because they made him happy. I want the same response from audiences when they see my show.”

Dolly Ahluwalia, who rose to film with Vicky Donor (2012), is a big fan of Comedy Nights With Kapil but is upbeat about Mad In India.

“It will be a refreshing comedy for families. I will be playing a realistic character, but I might go overboard at times. I’m trying to explore my abilities and limits on this show. Comedy on TV is improving. Today, with so much stress in life, we need shows that make us laugh out loud,” informs Dolly.

A big fan of Kapil Sharma, Dolly doesn’t want to compete with his show. “Let’s not get into comparisons. There is no need for it. Creativity, Kapil is doing well and no one can stop him as his show is wonderful.”

Having struck a good balance between costume designing and acting, Dolly finds it hard to pick a favourite. “I love and enjoy both. I haven’t cut down on costume designing to focus on films, but I don’t take on too much either. I get creative satisfaction when I do costumes. I have lived the characters through the costumes, be it Dolly in Omkara (2006), or Guddu and Sweety in Kaminey (2009).”

Coming back to Sunil, he said, “The show will have madness, happiness, smiles and a lot of fun. The audience will have a good time. I cannot reveal the format as of now, but we will be celebrating the madness in India I want it to be as popular and that the audience should be able to connect with it. I never thought that Gutthi will become as big as it did,” this is what Sunil told us as he signed off.
