Every now and then, there comes a film that makes us numb to the point where our conscience awakens itself and we start looking for answers to our “whys” and “why nots”. Masaan by director Neeraj Ghaywan is one of such films. After winning big at Cannes, the film released its official trailer today and after watching it, we are absolutely stunned.
The film will take us through the lives of two women who live in Varanasi. The trailer starts with Shweta Tripathi reciting a beautiful poem in the background and soon, we are introduced to the characters and their separate twisted stories in the film. First we meet Shalu, a girl who belongs to the upper class and falls in love with a guy from untouchable caste who earns his daily bread by burning dead bodies at the crematorium located at the ghat of Ganga. And then we meet second character from the film, Devi, who, along with her father, is being blackmailed by a police officer after the police catches her with her fellow student Piyush in a hotel and accuses them of indulging in “indecent behavior” and also records her MMS.

The trailer shows us glimpses of the incidents that follows in the lives of the characters in Masaan. Not only does it tell a story but it very much flashes sharp light on the dark corners of our society, all the wrong things that are hidden or just avoided. We absolutely loved Richa, Chadda, Vikas Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi and Sanjay Mishra in Masaan’s trailer. One film with two different stories raise many unasked and ignored questions. Masaan’s trailer will surely leave you restless as it reveals the dark secrets of our society, a subject not many people care to touch. The trailer itself urges us to move past the prejudice and open our minds and look beyond the fake boundaries.
After watching Masaan‘s trailer, we are looking forward to catch the film on the big screen. We just can’t wait to find out what happens in the lives of Devi and Shalu! Jointly produced by Manish Mundra, Macassar Productions, Anurag Kashyap’s Phantom Films and Sikhya Entertainment, Masaan was screened at Cannes Film Festival 2015 under Un Certain Regard. The film is all set to hit the theatres on July 24, 2015.
