Indian cinema; Pakistani hero

MUMBAI: Filmmaker – actor Ammtoje Mann after his controversial Hawayein on the riots post Indira Gandhi’s assasination, is back with Kaafila. Mann has written, produced, directed and acted in the film.

Kaafila is a path-breaking film in many ways. For the first time in Indian cinema, the main protagonist in the film is depicted as a patriotic Pakistani. The leading role in the film has been played by Sunny Deol. For Deol, this is a complete role reversal. In the past, he has played anti-Pakistani roles in films like Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, Border, Maa Tujhe Salaam and Indian.

Sunny Deol’s anti-Pakistani roles have ensured that Pakistanis in Pakistan and in other countries like the US and UK do not watch his films at all. In fact, in the US and UK, distributors refuse to buy films starring Sunny Deol.

Thus, Mannerism Films (P) Ltd.’s KAAFILA is yet another feather in the already-crowned cap of Sunny Deol. The Pakistani connection does not end here. Two female leads in the film are played by Sana Nawaz, a top film actor from Pakistan and Mona Lisa, a top television actor also from Pakistan. The film will release around Diwali.

Speaking about the film Ammtoje Mann says, “Kaafila is on illegal immigrants. The film has been shot at the actual locales all over the world like U.S.A., U.K., Afghanistan, Russia, Ukraine and Mumbai. The film has costed me in crores and within the planned budget. I don’t want to disclose the actual figures and see the Income Tax officials breathing down my neck. The dubbing and other post-production work for the film is on and will release it all over by October/November with a maximum number of prints and DLPs all over the world.”
