Ranbir Kapoor’s Next Is A Tribute To The Cinema Of Nasir Hussain

Ranbir Kapoor

MUMBAI: In the 1960s and ‘70s filmmaker  Nasir Hussain’s musicals, many of them with Shammi Kapoor in the male lead , like Dil Deke Dekho and Teesri Manzil  created a hungama.

Shammi Kapoor’s grand-nephew Ranbir is about to recreate those grand musical romances of Nasir Hussain in his next film Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani.

Says a source, “The thing about Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani is that it marks the coming together of a whole collection of Nasir Husain fans: producer Karan Johar, director Ayaan Mukerjee and of course Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir’s dad Rishi Kapoor who did two major films with Nasir Hussain, is also a driving-force and inspiration behind this project. So it’s time to do a full-on homage to Nasir Hussain.”

Interestingly Ayaan is closely related to one of Nasir Hussain’s closest creative associates, Sashadhar Mukherjee.

Apparently Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani would recreate the Nasir Hussain formula in a contemporary idiom.

Says the source, “It’s  the boy-meets-girl-in-a-hillstation formula that Nasir Saab patented in his Asha Parekh starrers featuring Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor and Joy Mukherjee.”

Apparently Ranbir’s performance would encompass all the actors who featured in Nasir Hussain’s cinema .

He has apparently been catching up with the entire body of Nasir Hussain’s films, from Tumsa Nahin Dekha to Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai.

While Ranbir and Ayaan remained unavailable for comment Rishi Kapoor said, “Ayaan’s film will be a full-on masala romance, boy-meets-girl, scenic locations, fabulous songs, you name it. Ranbir had told me he would never do the conventional hero’s role, never tilt his cap and zoom across the screen on a skateboard. So even when he’s doing a masala romance it would be his own take. I’ve done  romantic musicals with Nasir Hassain , Hum Kisise Kam Nahin and Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai. Now let’s see what Ranbir does with that genre.”
