Plagiarizing Tom Petty Was Unintentional, Says Sam Smith

Sam Smith‘s hit song Stay With Me would now have Tom Petty and his collaborator Jeff Lynne credited as the co-writer along with Sam Smith, James Napier and William Phillips! The duo would start earning a 12.5 percent credit on the royalties now.

Smith‘s song had an uncanny similarity with Petty’s I Won’t Back Down and when Petty’s team reached out to Smith’s representatives, they settled the matter amicably and agreed to share royalties with Petty and Lyne. The writers of Stay With Me acknowledged the similarity and said that it was a complete coincidence.

This is however not a first time experience for Petty. In 2001, The Strokes’ Last Nite resembled a lot like Petty’s American Girl.  Soon in an interview The Strokes actually admitted it. In 2006 again, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Dani California was too close to Petty’s Mary Jane’s Last Dance. Petty however, never filed a lawsuit against any of them!
