MUMBAI: After the court’s verdict that landed Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt in jail for five years, the actor had applied for a curative petition that seeked a review of the verdict. The Supreme Court will likely announce its decision on the verdict today.
Sanjay Dutt was convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal possession of arms. He is currently in Pune’s Yerawada Jail.
Initially a trial court had sentenced Sanjay Dutt to a six year jail sentence, but the Supreme Court reduced it to five years. The actor, however, only has to serve 42 months in jail as he had served 18 months in 1993 itself.
A curative petition can be filed only after the dismissal of a review petition. This petition can only be decided in the chambers of judges and not in an open court.
This is the last legal resort for Sanjay Dutt. If the Supreme Court does not approve of his petition, he will have to serve the full five year duration in jail.
Meanwhile, news from within the jail is that Sanjay Dutt is ill. Sources say the actor is suffering from insomnia and hypertension within the jail.
He has allegedly been examined by a few doctors who have diagnosed him with Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). Apparently, a proposal has been sent by the Yerawada Jail authorities to the government to move him to JJ Hospital in Mumbai.
Surprisingly, Yerawada Jail’s superintendent Yogesh Desai says that he does not know of any such illness regarding the actor. He also added that there were no plans to shift Sanjay Dutt to JJ Hospital.
Sanjay Dutt’s lawyer, Rizwan Merchant, too denied any knowledge of any illness.
