MUMBAI: In the wake of no fresh Hindi releases last week at multiplexes except Tasveer, Eros International’s Marathi film Mi Shivajiraje Bhonsale Boltoy broke the opening weekend collections record for a Marathi film.
The film, which is an Everest Entertainment and Mahesh Manjrekar co-production, debuted in theatres across Maharashtra on 3 April and garnered Rs 15 million (Rs 1.5 crores) in net box office collection from 139 screens.
Everest Entertainment’s Sanjay Chhabria said, "We knew we had a fantastic movie in our hands but the nature of mass hysteria around the release has been overwhelming. Marathi films usually pick up through word of mouth and don’t enjoy instantaneous success and the incredible opening that this film has received. This kind of response is a huge bolster for the future of Marathi cinema."
Apart from Maharashtra, Eros International also released the movie in other territories like Gujarat, Marathwada (Nizam), CP and Belgaum.
Directed by Santosh Manjrekar, the film stars Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Suchitra Bandekar, Priya Bapat, Abhijit Kelkar, Siddharth Jadhav and Bharat Dhabolkar.
