MUMBAI: This week saw the release of four films at the box office namely Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Road, Movie, Rokk and Thanks Maa, all of which have had a slow opening.
With an opening of approximately 30 per cent, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has done better business than the rest of the films. The movie did a net business of Rs 22.5 million (Rs 2.25 crore) on Friday.
Road, Movie on the other hand did well only in the morning shows with the younger crowd coming in to watch the film with average occupancy at 10-15 per cent at multiplexes.
Thanks Maa is more of a metro film and has had an average opening in cities like Mumbai and Delhi while it has fared badly in the rest of the centers. One of the reasons could be not enough publicity of the film and also a limited release.
The supernatural thriller Rokk too has failed to thrill the audiences and the opening has been very weak.
Speaking to Businessofcinema.com Fun Cinemas COO Vishal Kapur said, "All the films have done very average business. Out of all the films Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has fared better with around 30 per cent occupancy. The content of the film has not been appreciated."
However, Cinemax senior vice president Devang Sampat said, "Out of all the films that released this week Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has done well and it is slowly improving and picking up with word of mouth publicity."
Looks like this week was one of quantity sans quality at the box office.
