Bigg Boss Dronafied: Movie marketing with a twist

MUMBAI: Actors and directors making an appearance on television reality shows across channels to promote their upcoming movie is passé today!

Usually, celebs come in as judges, say their two bit to contestants and in the same breath also promote their movie to millions glued to their television sets. On Friday, Colors’ reality show Bigg Boss too saw producer – director Goldie Behl and actor Abhishek Bachchan making their appearance on the show to promote their upcoming flick Drona, which hits theatres next week on 2 October.

So what’s the ‘bigg’ deal?

This is what… Big Boss contestants were actually ‘Dronafied’ when as a part of the daily task given to them, four contestants were asked to don the garb of a superhero called Drona, his two assistants and the villain Riz.

But obviously Rahul camouflaged into Drona, Raja into Riz and Zulfi and Sambhavana as Drona’s helpers. The ‘good’ and the ‘evil’ were then asked to enact a fight! Bhel’s movie Drona is a story about good versus evil and that message was put across through this activity. It’s a different thing that Raja managed to overpower Rahul in their task enactment and it was actually a case of evil wins over good!! Hilarious as it was, the point here is the seamless integration of the movie’s characters and message into the reality show, which is a rarity these days.

Prior to this task, contestants were also given a mannequin along with some costumes and accessories and were asked to dress it up as a superhero that was called Drona and was out to save the world from evil forces.

And that’s not all… the usually ho-hum promo talk that takes place on these kind of reality shows took an interesting twist when Abhishek Bachchan was sent into the Bigg Boss house and the actor spent some time with the contestants. While he did look a tad bit out of place in the beginning, he was quick to gel in and made idle chitter-chatter with the housemates.

Until now movies like C Kkompany, Chamku and Welcome To Sajjanpur have been promoted via Bigg Boss prior to their theatrical release with the likes of Tusshar Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Shreyas Talpade and Amrita Rao chatting with Bigg Boss host Shilpa Shetty on Fridays. The guests come in; Shetty asks them questions about their upcoming movie, chit-chat a bit about the contestants and the guests exit.

At a time when the idiot box is choked with reality shows and to top it, they’re all splattered with actors, directors and producers promoting their next flick, the ‘Dronafied’ Bigg Boss episode came as a breath of fresh air and also raised the bar in terms of innovative movie promotions.

Psssst… Goldie Behl also wore a branded Drona T-Shirt on the show!
