Bombay High Court grants Shiney Ahuja bail in rape case

MUMBAI: Almost a month after the trial court convicted him for raping his maid, Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja has been granted bail by the Bombay High Court.

While granting him bail, Justice A.R. Joshi asked the actor to provide a bail bond of Rs 50,000.

The judge said that his custody was not required for now as he had already been convicted. However, he was asked not to leave the country without prior permission of the court.

The actor was convicted by the sessions court on 30 March, after which he had filed an appeal in the High Court.

The trial court had sentenced Ahuja to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment. In June 2009, Ahuja’s maid had lodged a complaint alleging that she was raped by the actor at his Oshiwara home. Ahuja was arrested on 14 June.
