MUMBAI: The box-office triumph of Lage Raho Munnabhai coupled with the Ghandigiri phenomenon has made the Sanjay Dutt starrer a cult film. In a bid to emulate its success, the film will now be remade in three languages- Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
Gemini Films has purchased the remake rights of this movie for more than Rs 80 million (Rs 8 crores).
“Gemini Films has purchased the remake rights of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Lage Raho Munnabhai. I can’t disclose the actual amount but it is definitely more than Rs 80 million. Munnabhai M.B.B.S. was also purchased by the same banner Gemini Films. However, the price was less than that of Lage Raho Munnabhai,” says Vinod Chopra Production executive producer Anil Dhawda.
While Kamal Hassan played the title role in the Tamil remake of Munnabhai M.B.B.S. called Vasool Raja M.B.B.S., in Telugu Chiranjeevi played Shankardada M.B.B.S. and in Kannada actor Upendra played Uppidada M.B.B.S. All these films proved to be box office successes in the South.
