Mumbai: The culture of remaking films has influenced many directors. Shoojit Sarkar, the director of Yahaan has been no exception to it. After the success of his film Yahaan, he is ready with his second film. He is remaking Bimal Roy’s Madhumati which was made way back in 1958 with Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala.
Madhumati is a story about a man who while traveling on a rainy night seeks shelter at somebody’s house because of his car breakdown. It is in this house that the protagonist finds out about his previous birth, his true love, Madhumati, their ill-fated, star-crossed and tragic romance, and how the events in his previous birth are going to affect him in this life-time.
Confirming the news lyricist and writer Gulzar says, “Yes I am writing the script for the new Madhumati for Shoojit. So many people around are making remakes these days. I guess it is an easy way of making films, when you have a classic. But it depends on how you interpret it.”
Bimal Roy’s other classics Devdas and Parineeta have also been remade recently and have translated into big hits at the box office.
