Sanjay Dutt surrenders; sent to Arthur Road

MUMBAI: After being out of jail for close to two months, actor Sanjay Dutt today surrendered to the police after he received a copy of the judgment from a TADA court, which convicted him in the 1993 serial blasts case.

The actor has been sentenced to six years rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act for illegal possession of an AK-56 assault rifle and a pistol. He has been sent to the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai temporarily. Dutt will later be shifted to another prison.

Dutt spent some days in Arthur Road jail and was later shifted to Pune’s Yerawada prison after he was sentenced on 31 July. The court granted interim bail to the actor until he received a copy of the judgment.

Media reports suggest that Dutt’s lawyers are expected to approach the Supreme Court for a regular bail and also challenge the six-year sentence awarded to him by the TADA court.

Incidentally, Dutt has already spent 16 months in jail in 1994 as an undertrial.
