Shah Rukh dominates overseas box office

MUMBAI: It has been proved time and again that Shah Rukh Khan is King Khan not only in India but also in the overseas territories. Riding on Khan’s fan following, producers are almost never disappointed at the overseas box office.

Farhan Akhtar’s Don starring Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra and Sajid Nadiadwala’s Jaan-E-Mann starring Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta released simultaneously on 20 October in India, the UK and the US.

While both movies have comsi comsa collections at the Indian box office, in the US, Don has done a business of $805,000, whereas Jaan-E-Mann has collected a meager $210,000, according to Variety Online.

What’s more, the story is no different in the UK. According to Neilsen EDI, Don did business of £395,000, whereas Jaan-E-Mann pocketed only £106,000.

UTV, the overseas distributor of Don, released 350 prints of the film. Thus reinforcing, that it was not a wrong decision to bet on the Shah Rukh starrer and releasing it with a record number of prints.

However, Jaan-E-Mann, is betting big on Idd, which is when the producers are hoping the film will pick up due to word of mouth publicity. According to the producers, the positive word of mouth publicity, coinciding with Idd has helped the film to a 100 per cent increase in the collections in Dubai.

While it remains to be seen how Jaan-E-Mann progresses in the coming days, Shah Rukh Khan leads the overseas markets for the time being.

Apart from Don, SRK’s earlier release of the year – Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, also did phenomenal business in the overseas despite the fact that film was not as big a hit in India. According to Nielsen EDI, KANK had opened at number six on the UK charts collecting £754,877 pounds. While in the US, it collected $1,047,403 and opened at number 17 at the US charts. KANK pocketed $178,000 in Australia and $100,000 in Singapore.
