Shilpa Shetty to receive Rajiv Gandhi award


MUMBAI: After receiving an honorary doctorate from the Leeds Metropolitan University recently, actress Shilpa Shetty is all set to receive the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award on 12 August, 2007.


The function to be held in Mumbai, will be attended by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, leader of Congress party Sonia Gandhi, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and chief minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh.


Elaborating on the development, Shetty’s publicist Dale Bhagwagar said, “To be a worldwide achiever at such young age is a matter of utmost prestige for Shilpa. She is extremely grateful to be chosen for this honour.”


Earlier recipients of the Rajiv Gandhi Quality Award include personalities like Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Adi Godrej, Anand Mahindra, Sunil Mittal, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Sant Singh Chatwal, Shah Rukh Khan, Tarun Tejpal, Rajdeep Sardesai, Sania Mirza and Sachin Tendulkar.


Shetty catapulted to fame with her participation and ultimate win in UK’s reality show Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year. The hullabaloo around Celebrity Big Brother went to another level when Shetty was subject to racial discrimination from contestant Jade Goody.
