UTV & Shekhar Suman ink JV; float company

MUMBAI: UTV Software Communications and actor Shekhar Suman have cut a joint venture deal for a new production house called Windmill Entertainment.

This will be independent of UTV’s production house for television and films. The duo have already started off with two feature films, Dhaan which is being directed by Makrand Deshpande and Smile, Please OK directed by Ashwini Dheer.

The production’s creative is being managed by Karuna Samtani, who was earlier the COO of Sahara One Television and was also a core team member of Subhash Chandra’s Zee Telefilms.

Speaking exclusively to Businessofcinema.com, Shekhar Suman says, “The focus is on television and film content. We are also churning out some concepts from television, which has got positive response. We will be doing a show on Sahara One for sure.”

As of now they are working on a thriller show and a series based on football. Apart from these two dailies, Windmill Entertainment plans to revive Reporter, a show which used to air on DD with Suman as the main lead.

Adds Suman, “This is the right time for a show like Reporter to hit the tube. The relevance of Reporter will be much more than what it was earlier.”

When queried as to whether Windmill Entertainment has chalked out any show for UTV’s new youth channel Bindaas, Suman says, “We will do shows for Bindaas as well. But we would like to work more on outside the network.”

UTV executive director Siddharth Roy Kapur adds, “As of now, this venture is restricted to television. I can’t comment on whether we will produce films too. That may happen in the future.” On being further probed about the same, he added, “We haven’t made any official announcement.”
