If you thought ‘Chennai Express’ has been gathering passengers only in India, then you’re mistaken. The 670 screens abroad have come to use with the film earning the highest opening day for a Hindi film in the Gulf as well as the UK. The film is also doing well in the US and Pakistan. On Monday the film earned Rs 12.41 crore net and on Tuesday Rs 11.36 crore net, thus taking its overall total so far to Rs 124.02 crore net.
The buzz around the cost of production of the film is said to be around Rs 50 crore, while around Rs 30 crore was the budget for advertising. Rohit Shetty takes home a fee of approximately Rs 15 crore and then there is Shah Rukh Khan too. Not to forget that Shah Rukh Khan will get a share of the profits. But with such a mammoth budget, most films would think twice to break even. ‘Chennai Express’ doesn’t look like it is having such issues.
Of course, now it is to be seen whether it will break the record of ‘3 Idiots’ of being the highest Hindi film grosser of all time. The biggest challenge arrives on 15 August when ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara’ releases. Screens will be come lesser, crowds may shift to the Akshay Kumar-starrer.
