Veteran actor and director Amol Palekar who has given many hit films including “Rajnigandha”, “Ek Chhoti Si Baat”, “Chitchor”, “Gol Maal” and others, has been appointed as chairman of India’s Oscar jury on August 24, 2015. Celebrating the proud moment, the director will select the country’s official entry in the best foreign film category of the 88th Academy Awards.
Amol Palekar 70, will be heading the 17-member jury from September 17 to September 24 2015. Earlier his film “Paheli” was into India’s official entry for the Academy Awards in 2005. Secretary General of the Mumbai-based Film Federation of India said, “We have selected Amol Palekar as the head of India’s Oscar jury. He is an eminent film personality.”
In 2014, Liar’s Dice, a road drama that starred Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles, was selected as India’s official entry to the Best Foreign Film category of Oscars in competition to other films including “Shahid”, “Queen”, “Mardaani”, Marathi films “Yellow” and “Fandry” and Bengali films “Jatishwar” and “Apur Panchali”
Amol Palekar who also gave his take on the selection as Oscar jury said, that he is happy being appointed as chairman of India’s Oscar jury. He also said that the team has not yet decided on any criteria for selecting a film for Oscars.
As an actor, he was most outstanding for over a decade from 1970. His image as a “boy next door” contrasted with the larger-than-life heroes prevalent at that time in Indian cinema. He received one Filmfare and six State awards as Best Actor. His performances in regional language films in Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam and Kannada fetched him critical acclaim as well.
Well, Indian film industry had also shared a proud moment when films like Mother India, Salaam Bombay! and Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India made it to the top five at the Academy Awards.
The 88th Academy awards event will start from February 28, 2015 in Los Angeles.
