MUMBAI: There are reports floating around Mumbai that a number of Bollywood filmmakers have been sounded out about the possibility of making a bio-pic on Balasheb Thackeray.
However the one name that keeps recurring is that of Mahesh Manjrekar. For various reasons he is being seen as the perfect candidate to make a film on the much-revered leader of the masses.
Says a source known to the Thackeray family, “The family’s supporters are keen on a bio-pic. There are several filmmakers who have expressed a keenness. But Balasheb’s supporters are looking at a director who has observed the man closely, understands his politics and is preferably Marathi. Mahesh Manjrekar fits the bill.”
When contacted Mahesh didn’t deny getting the offer. “I have received the offer to direct a film on Balasaheb. But I am busy with two acting assignments in Hindi, ‘Himmatwala’ and ‘Shootout At Wadala’. I am also starting a Marathi film with Sachin Khedeker. More importantly I’ve nothing to do with politics .”
Enough said, as far as Mahesh is concerned. However one hears certain section of Balasaheb’s supporters are “very keen” that Mahesh do the needful.
Whether the director finally gives in to popular demand remains to be seen.
A friend of Mahesh let slip that Mahesh has not given up the idea of a film on Balasaheb.
“He is still open to the idea and may make it with his favourite actor Sachin Khedeker,” says the friend.
