Kiran Rao: Also from the Aamir Khan camp, Kiran Rao is another insanely talented filmmaker. Her debut film, Dhobi Ghat, was richly populated with silences and dense visuals that made the audience sit back and ponder. She was also responsible for picking up a film like Ship Of Theseus, and ensuring it got a wider release. We suspect that the best is yet to come from Aamir’s eccentric, talented and quirky wife.

Special mention must also be made for filmmakers like Deepa Mehta (Earth, Fire, Water, Midnight’s Children), Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake) and Aparna Sen (Mr. And Mrs. Iyer, The Japanese Wife). These are female directors who have literally pushed the envelope, and excel in telling poignant, richly cinematic and moving stories on celluloid.
