Peepli Live Director Mahmood Farooqui Held For Rape Charges

Peepli-LiveMahmood Farooqui, popularly known as co-director and scriptwriter of 2010 popular film Peepli Live was arrested by Delhi police on Saturday, June 20, 2015 for rape charges.

The director was arrested by the Delhi police for allegedly raping US based woman around three months ago. The 30 year old, Indian origin woman who filed the complaint is pursuing her PhD from an American university, approached the Delhi Police along with a senior official of the US Embassy on Friday to file an FIR.

The 30 year old research scholar alleged in her complaint that Mahmood Farooqui raped her in March 2015 during a party at his rented house in Sukhdev Vihar locality where two other persons including a journalist were present at the party.

Reportedly, according to her police complaint, the woman stayed back after the party while others had left and that is when Farooqui sexually assaulted her. Soon after that accuser’s wife Anusha Rizvi arrived but the victim left without telling her anything about the incident. Reportedly, the woman returned to US around 10 days later from the incident.

The director who is sent to 14-day judicial custody on Sunday was immediately called for questioning after the case was filed against him on June 19 and the next day itself he was under arrest. A case was filed under IPC Section 376 (rape) at the New Friends Colony police station.

Farooqui’s wife Anusha Rizvi who also co-directed Peepli Live with him has denied all the allegations. In her statement she said that they are waiting for court’s decision where the actual truth would come out and thanked all the well wishers and colleagues for showing some support for him. She also said that she would fight till reality is presented in front of people.
