As soon as the news of ex- President ABJ Abdul Kalam’s death broke out, the world stood still in shock. It took a while to grasp the shocking news and react.On Monday, Kalam took his last breath at the ICU of Bethany hospital, where he was rushed into in a critical condition after he collapsed. Two hours after he was rushed into the hospital, Kalam was confirmed dead at the age of 83. APJ Abdul Kalam was at IIM Shillong, giving a lecture the evening when he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and collapsed to the ground.
Kalam, who was the first president to address the Indian Science Congress in 90 years, was wheeled to the Bethany hospital at 7 pm, which is a km away from the institute. APJ Abdul Kalam, who became popular as ‘People’s President’ was feeling unwell when he arrived at the institute at around 5:40 pm. Kalam took some rest for some time and soon started with the lecture on ‘Livable Planet’ at 6:35 pm. Later, he collapsed to the ground in the middle of the lecture and was rushed to the nearest hospital. Special arrangements are being made to carry Kalam’s body from Guwahati to Delhi on Tuesday morning.
Doctors from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and army hospital arrived soon to Bethany hospital but it was too late. As informed by Union Home Secretary L C Goyal, a seven-day national mourning will be declared by the Centre.
