The melody queen and the Padma Shri awardee Raj Begum took her last breath today. The legendary Kashmiri singer passed away after the prolonged illness at her daughter’s residence in Chanapora area of the city. The veteran singer ruled the generations of Kashmiri music lovers with her melodious voice. Raj Begum was born in 1927 in Magarmal Bagh in Srinagar. The 89-year old singer had been singing since her childhood and she started her career by singing at weddings. Raj Begum became Kashmir’s greatest singers of all time and she came into limelight after 1947 when the Radio Kashmir was started. She became popular by Radio Kashmir as they broadcasted her soulful compositions very often.
She had two sons and one daughter. Raj Begum was awarded Padma Shri in 2002 and then with Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2013. India has surely lost one of the melodious singers who wowed everyone with her stellar voice.
